Several tests can be used to detect this cancer at an early stage:

The fecal occult blood test (FOBT)
Fecal immunochemical test
Flexible sigmoidoscopy
Colonoscopy
Barium enema with air contrast
Virtual colonoscopy

Cancer Society Screening Guidelines:

Beginning at age 50, men and women should have:

- a fecal occult blood test (FOBT)* every year, or

- flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years, or

- double-contrast barium enema every 5 years, or

- colonoscopy every 10 years
